During Churches Unlocked...
Open Hours:
9am - 9pm everyday
During these open times:
Most days during the Churches Unlocked Festival, local musicians will also be playing and singing in St Cybi’s while you explore. We’ll keep it quiet between 9 and 10 every morning for visitors who are seeking prayerful silence. But don’t be surprised if later in the day you hear a choir, instrumentalist, or ensemble rehearsing: just come in and enjoy the atmosphere as you look around. On Saturday 3rd June, Byrdsong will be rehearsing in church, and on Friday 9th, Llandenny Strings.

About
History lies in many layers at Llangybi - literally, on the walls of St Cybi’s church, where colourful mediaeval murals lay hidden for centuries, overpainted by black-letter puritan zealotry.
Our community has changed again within living memory from an old-world fox-hunting estate to a diverse and welcoming modern village.
Deep in our past we commemorate Cornish Saint Cybi in our church and holy well, anchoring us in ancient Celtic Christian spirituality.
Church and Castle (both then known as Tregrûg - yet another layering) belonged to the mediaeval Earldom of March and passed through the hands of Tudor Kings and Queens.

Llangybi was burned down during Owain Glyndŵr’s campaign, and the castle blown up in the English Civil War.
The tragic ‘Llangibby Murders’ (1878) are commemorated in our churchyard.
The survival of our hidden mediaeval wall paintings was ensured by a cautious restoration of the church in 1907, and essential conservation of both roof and murals was completed with the help of Lottery and CADW funding between 2015 and 2018.
St Cybi’s church is at a crossroads now as part of the new Heart of Monmouthshire Ministry Area, and we look forward to a renewed vision of serving our whole community.
