About

The site was originally occupied by a Roman building (possibly a temple).

The subsequent medieval church dated from c1146. In mid 18th-century services were held in Welsh, by 1813 only chiefly in Welsh.

In 1839 Chartists marching to Newport passed the church, which was locked to shelter parishioners.

The discovery of coal seams on parish land and subsequent population expansion led to demolition of the old church in 1852 and commissioning of architect W G Habershon to design the present building.

The church contains some interesting memorials as well as unusual abstract 20th-century stained glass by Celtic Studios.
